Matthew Swann was last seen leaving the Saratoga Street cells, collected by someone who bundled him into a waiting carriage.
“He were with a funny looking man, even if he be dandified, with a face that done brought to mind a rat,” the guard told Jude Royer before a hostile cough from his superior interrupted him.
“Why did you release Mr. Swann?” Jude had asked.
“’Cause the law said so,” sneered the superior.
Jude didn’t miss the sarcasm. Especially once he found out who the law was.
