“..But unfortunately, the only indisputable universal truths readily evident in mankind are that we are all the same species, and we are also completely, utterly, unequal…”
The words still rang in Jude’s mind in the darkened bedroom at the top of Mrs. Melville’s house.
He glared at the wavering candlelight, which seemed to mirror the wavering thoughts in his mind. He resisted inequality could be associated with justice. The notion of liberty having different meanings bothered him.
“Equality and inequality are diametrically opposed. Why must there be two different approaches to justice instead of one right answer?” he sharply demanded.
But Ernst surprised him. “Are equality and inequality really that opposed to each other?” he mysteriously said.
He winked at Jude and laughed again. “You are still asking if there is a right or wrong when it comes to justice.”
Jude nodded.
“Perhaps there is.” Ernst stroked his sideburn thoughtfully.
