The thoughts lingered in Henry’s mind.
“I regret to inform you, Henry Gambler,” the blond man said while removing his gloves from his hands, which he did not extend in a handshake. “You failed in the task ordered of you.”
“I knew it!” Pulson exploded. He sprouted off a stream of vulgarities. “I done tole…”
“Shut up, Mr. Pulson.”
“What eees wrong?” Ferrandini asked, his accent sharpening. “Mr. Swann eees arrested!”
“The police did not find the required letter on Matthew Swann. My man in the police confirmed it. Without that letter, it will be difficult to keep Mr. Swann imprisioned. Perhaps Henry can explain why?”
“I ain’t like talkin’ to those I ain’t know,” Henry said.
“My name is James Gilmor,” the blond man said. His expression also said: You will not forget it.
